16 Rejoice always
17 Pray continually
18 Give thanks in every situation because this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
As we wake up each day, we are blessed. We are blessed to wake up, breathe in God's air, get out of bed and walk on God's ground. We are blessed to have Jesus as our Savior. We are blessed to go throughout the day having food, water, and air to survive. Some people have less than others and some none at all.
Every one of us has some things that we want to accomplish in our time here on earth. Some are prideful wishes, some are greedy, some are needy, and some humble. We can keep going on with that list but I will stop there.
Prideful wishes or desires are to me the ones that some may think they need for status. To look important or bigger on other peoples eyes.Cars can be a good place to start. Having seen many people I have known in the past that have had high end cars only because of the name and status society has placed on them. These people I'm referring to most often would look down on a person because they drove a less expensive car. Think about that for a minute, judging a person because of what they drive.
Don't get me wrong here. I like cars. They are fast and cool to me. Some are expensive. But I have no desire to have such a thing out of pride or greed. I also don't have the desire to be a bad steward with God's money wasting it on something as trivial as an overpriced sowing machine.
Greedy wishes or desires, are the worst in my opinion. They are selfish and that's it. These people have to gain all they can at any cost and have no desire to help others or share what they have acquired.
This can also be an emotional greed where someone doesn't want to give his or her own time or let someone else give their time to others. These people usually don't care who they hurt to get what they want.
When someone has needy wishes or desires, this obviously comes from a place of lack. Many people who are homeless or living in impoverished areas or countries know this all too well. It may be food and water that they do not have. Maybe it’s having a home, or a home in a safe neighborhood or out of war stricken zones. Maybe it is even minimal healthcare. Maybe it is all of the above. The list goes on.
And then there are humble desires. I look at these desires as many of God's children do. That is the desire to spread God's word, and to have as many souls saved as possible. This also includes the desire to help others regardless if they are saved or not. It doesn’t matter the color of their skin, their own spiritual beliefs or whether or not they get anything in return for helping others. These people are content with what they have. And if they gain more (possessions, money, etc) they are beyond grateful and always continue to try to give more than they receive.
The first two desires I talked about will only lead to heartache to ones self or others around them. It may be quick or it may take a lifetime, but greedy and prideful desires are not well and are sinful in God's eyes.
13 “And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to who we must give account” Hebrews 4:13. As we know from the Bible “the wages of sin is death”. Romans 6:23
People that have needy desires, especially through no fault of their own, are the ones dearest to my heart. It pains me to see a homeless person stuck in the rain, without food, living in filth, and without anyone to talk to. I find that most of these people are so grateful for anything you do for them. It may just be saying “hello” or “God Bless You”, or giving them a cup of coffee. It doesn’t matter. Most of the time they just want to be treated like a human being and not looked down upon. “He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, And He will pay back what he has given.” Proverbs 19:17
The desires of these people can also be something that takes them out of life threatening situations. Think of people in Syria who are being gassed to death, and the people in Haiti who are starving and with out medical attention. These people are not asking for this. Corrupt Governments and Greedy Foundations are often the root cause of this.
As we go through life, most people that fall into the last desire (humility) are the ones that are most at peace. They are quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to grow angry. (James 1:19).
Their desires are met with giving and helping others. It doesn't matter if it is time, money, food, an ear to hear, or anything else they can give. This brings joy to them as well as God our Father. And on top of this, they can and do minister to the ones they help. They plant seeds of faith to build one up and not tear them down. These seeds can lead a person to Jesus. Where only He can change a heart.
If Jesus is allowed to clean out the trash in our hearts, we will see that pride and greed do not belong. We will see that compassion for others and their needs rather than our own, will always give more pleasure and joy in return.
16 Rejoice always
Father I rejoice in everything that has happened in my life and also things that are to come. The joy is found in knowing that You will always be there with me and for me. It gives me joy to do Your works and to help others. Everyone has the good and bad things happen in life. We are to rejoice in knowing that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28
17 Pray continually
Father, You tell us in Jeremiah 33:3, “Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know”. Lord I come to You in prayer in the morning, throughout the day, the evening and before it is time to sleep. There isn’t a time when You are not available. There isn’t a time when I come to You that You do not hear my prayers. For this I pray and commune with You all day long. When I get angry, You correct me and calm me. When I am sad, You bring comfort. When someone has wronged me, You remind to forgive so that I will be forgiven by You. You remind me to be as You created me to be in Your vision.
18 Give thanks in every situation because this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
God Our Father, Lord Jesus and The Holy Spirit, as each day arrives, we pray to You and give You all the glory for us to have another day. We give thanks in all things that we take for granted everyday single day like water to drink, food to eat, air to breathe, and Your Grace and Mercy which endures forever.
There are peaks and valleys that we are to be thankful for. We will never know YOUR ways or be able to do them ourselves. All things that happen can and will be used for Your Glory. I Thank You God that You have given me a thankful heart, and compassion for others. Remind me to always be this way as this is Your will for me Christ Jesus. Remind me that I am "Blessed"
In Jesus Mighty Name Amen and Thank You
